The task included the transport of 16 components – cutter heads, shields, reels – as well as forty 40’ containers from Riyadh in Saudi Arabia to Fos-sur-Mer in the South of France. All shipments are for a used tunnel boring machine.
“The first challenge was reaching the site in Riyadh to collect the cargo. There were a lot of road restrictions which made the collection a bit difficult”, says Lionel Guilbaud, Blue Water’s Project Specialist in France.
Also, the administrative part of the project including the customs procedures turned out to be a bit comprehensive and challenging. Finally, Blue Water’s stevedores had to work in 44 degrees centigrade in Dammam and the challenging parts of the project continued.
“As the cargo arrived in Fos-sur-Mer, we transshipped the cargo from the master vessel onto a river barge. It can be a difficult manoeuvre as the weather may also be a determining factor. Everything went as planned though”, says Lionel Guilbaud.
At the end of October, the 40’ containers will arrive in France.
